thomas is a versatile artist who told me that he needed some actor's headshots for casting calls. he had an interesting look that wasn't quite dramatic but he could only be featured in tv roles or movies. I met him when he was working on his website but I didn’t know he was interested in acting. I think that as an artist you are only limited to what you think you can do. the power is within, you can express it through playing music, playing a character or expressing it through choreography or even designing.

we set up a date for the shoot and he brought a full wardrobe assortment for different looks. though we had worked together before, it was only remotely, so I was meeting him in real life for the first time when he walked into the studio. I had always thought that he was a dead serious kind of guy you couldn't get a laugh out of. he's smaller than I thought but actors come in all sizes. after introductions, a little conversation to ease him up, it was light, camera, action. as I was taking more pictures, he was feeling relaxed enough to strike different poses from dramatic to formal, to even comical. that allowed us to cover enough looks for different characters. though people usually think of acting with regard to the big screen, there's a growing demand of talent for tv and advertising. I thought he was well qualified to play in both. we took s over 100 pictures out of which he selected 12. I touched them up in photoshop and delivered to his satisfaction.

altorro is a young man who wanted updated actor's headshots as well as pictures for his business. he was going for a formal look for his professional shots, a business casual as well as a more sporty look. since I was shooting headshots for a black actor , I tried to use lighting for drama. we started with the unshaven look with a jacket and unbuttoned shirt, then another series with dark t-shirt and blue jeans. we then paused for him to shave, wear a suit and tie for the more businsess look. between the wardrobe changes I adjusted my lighting to reveal more of his character.
I saw a lot of potential in him and could see a promising movie career. his credentials included being featured on roles on some independent films in the district and is listed on the internet movie database (imdb). having some likeness to denzel washington may also be his opportunity for a big break to stardom.

it was around the time I had moved my photography studio to 14th street, washington dc. I think prior to that, I had had maybe one client who needed actor’s headshots. business was slow but the only occasional clients that I had were a mix of business, models and portraits. the very first acting client that I had was a lady who had booked a shoot a couple of months earlier. she had requested to have a makeup artist at a time I was wondering whether it was absolutely necessary to have one for actors headshots. later I found out that she had quite a few skin blemishes that she hoped the makeup would cover up. this guy booked a shoot for 10am, which was quite early by my standards. it turned out to be only one of two appointments that I ever had that early. the other one was for a lady conductor who wanted some corporate headshots for her promotional brochure.

traveling to nw dc was a little extensive trip, specially, I had to take the train, then wait for a bus before I could reach uptown 14th street. my studio was located in the basement of a clothing store. as I walked into the store the lady told me ‘you have a client waiting’. we introduced each other and proceeded to walk downstairs. he told me that he was a dancer but he was interested in trying his hand at acting. for someone who’s already a performer, the transition shouldn’t be that challenging. he was a well built young man with good looks and dreadlocks.

for the most part, I tried to use dramatic lighting to accent his sculptural shape. he was very easy to work with and had great comfort in front of the camera. change of clothes was very basic. he had a dark brown sweater that he started with. then at some point took it off, leaving only a dark body suit which was revealing his muscular shape. I took a few close up headshots but most of the pictures were rather half body shots.

the shoot went fast as it proceeded like it was choreographed. we ended up with about 100 shots, with which he seemed very pleased. since I had his email, I offered to send him a link to the processed files later in the evening. he made his choice promptly and I retouched the pictures and sent him a cd the following day.

this must have been my first photo shoot with an aspiring actress in dc. the lady contacted me and expressed her desire to have a makeup artist. I kinda thought that makeup was not necessary for actors headshots but women just want to look gorgeous. the makeup artist showed up early as usual. this was gonna be the third time we worked together. when the lady arrived I saw that she had a few blemishes on the face that she might have wanted to conceal with the makeup.
she was very concerned about how she would look on the pictures and I was doing my utmost best to give her assurances. everybody knows that makeup can only go that far and for skin badly flawed the help of photoshop is a must. I have quite an extensive background in photoshop from my experience as a graphic designer and am used to retouching pictures myself. I promised the lady that photoshopping would take care of the blemishes makeup wouldn't cover and showed her some sample of glamour retouching from some fashion magazines.
the shoot went quite well. after she made her selection, I did some basic retouching on all of the pictures except one that I found the best and did some beauty retouching on it. beauty retouching is just using photoshop airbrushing to give extra gloss to the pictures just like those you see in fashion magazines. when I sent the pictures expecting a thank you, I got a response that I was supposed to glamorize all of the 12 pictures that she selected.
I said that it would take me about 25 min to glamorize pictures and to apply that treatment to 12 pictures would be too much for the $99 she paid me. she wouldn't have it. she wanted her money back, which I refused. I made a mistake. she would harass me over a period of nearly a year. to this day, I regret not refunding her money. it would've cost me less in headaches.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15870640199285037415noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4387950107554509095.post-77076126161119606552014-10-23T20:34:00.001-07:002014-10-25T11:24:36.185-07:00amina testimonialAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15870640199285037415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4387950107554509095.post-30641889648976253832014-09-25T09:43:00.001-07:002015-03-14T12:18:52.584-07:00examples of actor headshots in dcexamples of actor headshots in dc
these are picture samples of a man who booked a photo shoot for actor's headshots. he wanted to submit pictures to castings but was kinda worried that the scars on his face would ruin his chances of getting an audition. I would've preferred that he looks the way he is but prefer to look different. I tried to reassure him that having imperfections was fine since they were showing him the way he looked like. I told him also, if he wanted, I could edit all the skin blemishes in photoshop and he was happy to hear it. we did a full hour shoot and he had a few changes of clothes. different moods. little change in lighting. I think he came out with great headshots. he made his selection after a while and I did more than the traditional touchup in photoshop. since he wanted the scars and skin blemishes removed, I did a more advanced retouching, without extra change and looking at his smile, he seemed very happy.

I had the pleasure to do a shoot with this good looking young man who relocated to washington dc from california who was looking for a dc photographer to take some actors headshots so he could submit some pictures for casting. he's tall and good looking and had a pretty good idea of what he wanted. he brought in a couple of changes of clothes, mainly shirts because all we were gonna take was head and shoulder pictures. either he had acted before or else, he felt very comfortable in front of the camera. I set my lighting so I could get some good contrast. we got some music going and pretty soon, it was camera, action. we took about 100 pictures out of which he selected 12 and was very happy - see more samples of actors headshots

photo shoot with an aspiring dc teen actress with a beautiful smile. all american girl with dreams to make it big someday in the movies or a tv sitcom. she wasn't really sure whether she would go for modeling or acting. since the shoot is booked for an hour, she could do both at no extra charge. she had brought a whole wardrobe for a few changes of clothes, so we decided to do some acting headshots with different looks. in between, we would take a few modeling shots with half body and full body shots with different lighting setups and poses so she could have a wide selection to choose from. sshe needed to have some headshots printed and a comp card that she could also send to some modeling agencies as well. she got great pictures and I helped her find a printer for comp cards and resume. she needed the pictures before the weekend and we were lucky to get the prints back in time for her trip to new york. she was very happy. see more sample actor heashots on sharpfocus photography website

I got the check about 2 weeks later. for someone who was used to get paid on the spot, that was quite a long wait.

I finished a shoot for a hair expo project. I shot the project using negative film. after I got the processed film, I needed to scan some images so I could do some photo editing and optimize some images for print. I placed the negatives on a flatbed scanner but the film slid to the side of the scanner. with the moving part it got partially destroyed, ruining one image that was my favorite. armed with patience and a good supply of tea I sat at the computer and with the help of photoshop set out to restore the image. it took me a while of industrious effort to clean up the scratches, clone some part of the image and using various tools in photoshop reconstitute part of the image that was unrecognizable. the end result is not perfect but it was a good exercise to test the limits of what I could achieve in photoshop.

how did I come up with the concept of 'sharpfocus'? I had a contax fitted with zeiss lenses. one particularly a 85mm at f1.4 extremely sharp that I used mainly for what it was designed for: portrait photography. I fell in love with it. even at full aperture, the lens was so sharp that you would see the pores in the forehead. one woman told me she didn't like it. it reveals all your flaws. can't you make it a little softer? she asked. at the time, I was just a photographer. no name. except myself. life's tortuous paths took me to several directions until I even forgot that I was once a photographer. when I was in columbus, I would take pictures once in a while but that was merely to document my fashions. fast forward. dc. I worked in a photolab but didn't really like it because I was confined to production in the lab, loading film, processing, drying and things like that. I've always seen myself as an artist. so the practice of photography devoid of any creativity didn't really appeal to me that much. after a stint in graphic design, I started designing website. autoreverse was born from the ashes of souleye which was an umbrella website for all my endeavors. in 2001, my web designing efforts were not taking me anywhere. I dusted off my aging contax, and thought well, I have experience in fashion, experience in photography. and I like women. so I chose to start as a model photographer. domain name. I thought sharp focus would be cool. sharpfocus (no space) cute? that's how sharpfocus photography was born.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15870640199285037415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4387950107554509095.post-47100105160228254682014-01-13T07:26:00.003-08:002014-01-13T07:27:48.936-08:00photography gear 3 - the single reflex camera

a single lens camera (slr) is basically a camera that uses a system that captures the light through a mirror and a prism that directs the light to the viewfinder. the mirror is at a 45% angle, allowing it to direct the light vertically toward the prism but when the photographer presses the shutter release, the mirror flips upward to let the light go directly to hit the film. the term 'reflex' comes from the reflection of the mirror system used to redirect the light. it was an ingenuous invention that allowed the photographer to view exactly the image that is passing through the lens and is captured on film.

the pentaprism situated on the roof of the camera sits on the optical path between the mirror and the viewfinder. it reflects the light several times to make up for the initial inversion caused by the lens. if you would look at the image directly through the lens, it would appear upside down.

the single lens reflex is further development form the earlier cameras that used to have two light paths. one for the viewfinder and one that goes straight through the lens to hit the film. since the camera had two lenses they were referred to as twin-lens reflex (tlr). the major drawback of those cameras, in addition to bulk was, that since you have two light paths, they were not sharing the same optical path. though that wasn't too noticeable on medium and long range, at a short distance, parallax used to cause some framing errors, especially in close-up photography.
I was born and raised in Dakar Senegal, West Africa. I
came to photography almost by accident. I wanted to be a moviemaker. Cinema
helped shape my vision of the world at a very young age. Growing up in a small
country town, the movie was really a window to a world that was larger than
life. A little town in Senegal would not even be the size of a village in
America. We didn’t have many distractions. Apart from football, called here
soccer, there was the movie. It was an open air movie theater that was sitting
across the street from our house. So at night, when we were idling, it wasn’t
rare that we would go to the cinema and just hang around. I was very artistic.
Good at drawing and later took to painting. Formative years I guess. When I
graduated from high school I missed a chance to attend film school in France
simply because the people who could’ve helped me didn’t believe that there was
a career in cinema. By the time I was in university, I had been reading every
book that I could lay my hands on about movie making until I saw on tv someone
who lived in my neighborhood showing on TV some ‘artistic’ pictures that he
took of Goree Island. That was the ‘click’ – watershed event. It really dawned
on me that you could express your creativity through photography without having
to worry about all of the resources to pull a film together. Gradually a shift
was going on in my mind and I started looking into photography more seriously.

in the days of film, we used to have different types of cameras targeting different types of photographers and suitable for different budget. if we define a photographer as someone who uses a camera. from the occasional photography buff who would load a film roll to save memories of the last family vacation, to the seasoned pro who makes a living from taking pictures. in the early days of photography of course, there didn’t use to be such distinction when Kodak first introduced the brownie camera in 1900. it was a point-and-shoot camera designed for mass appeal and was according to kodak’s advertisement "so simple they can easily [be] operated by any school boy or girl".
a point-and-shoot camera is a camera that is simple and inexpensive designed for the occasional photographer who’s only interested in taking pictures and not worry about anything else. it takes its name from that simplicity because To take a "snapshot," all one had to do was hold the camera waist height, aim, and press a button. their extreme simplicity comes with a lot of limitations which makes them unsuitable for a more advanced level in photography.

it’s hard to talk about image capture without getting deep into camera technology. the photographic camera got its name from Leonardo davinci’s early experiments in capturing images in a dark room with a pinhole that would project a reverse image on the flat surface of a parallel wall. hence the name camera obscura which translates from the Italian ‘dark room’. see picture
